SSK: slip next 2 sts knitwise, then knit these 2 sts together through the backs of the loops

Alteration notes

This pattern requires a multiple of 10 sts, and so the maths of working a smaller or larger size wouldn't work easily at this gauge. If a larger or smaller size is required, quite simply use a finer or thicker yarn with corresponding needles.

Remember that the ladder created by the dropped stitch provides much greater width than the stitch itself, and will stretch up to 3 or even 4 times it's width!

Special techniques

It's really important to use the right cast-on method for this Hat. I cable cast-on instinctively for everything I make, and yet for this Hat it looked awful. After dropping the stitches the edge became all messy and uneven, and started to look like it might fall apart.

After a bit of playing around, I discovered that the best method was backward loop cast-on, which I understand is the easiest and most common way to cast on. If at the end you feel the Hat needs some strength around the brim, a crochet finish might help.

How to

Cast on 60 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Body

Work in stocking stitch (knit every round) until the main body of the Hat measures approximately 8 in/20 cm (or desired length)

Rnd 1: *K9, drop next stitch; rpt from * to end [54 sts]

Rnd 2: *K7, ssk; rpt from * to end [48 sts]

Rnd 3: *K6, ssk; rpt from * to end [42 sts]

Rnd 4: *K5, ssk; rpt from * to end [36 sts]

Rnd 5: *K4, drop next stitch, K1; rpt from * to end [30 sts]

Rnd 6: *K3, ssk; rpt from * to end [24 sts]

Rnd 7: *K2, ssk; rpt from * to end [18 sts]
