Description

Hat of Horns is a playful sculptural Hat worked in UK double crochet (US single). There are two versions - one with 3 horns, one each at the centre front, centre back and at the crown. The 2nd version has 5 horns, with an additional horn at each side. It's worked in sections and seamed.

Notes

The Hat is constructed from 5 squares – one at the centre forms the top of the Hat, with the other 4 placed & joined at each edge of the centre square, forming the 4 sides of the Hat.

1st version requires 2 plain squares and 3 horned squares,

2nd version requires 5 horned squares.

Plain square

Make 3ch, ss to 1stch to join

Rnd 1: 1ch, 5dc into ring, ss to 1stch

Rnd 2: 1ch, 1dc into base of ring, 2dc into each dc all the way around, ss to 1stch

Rnd 3: 1ch, 3dc into next dc, *1dc into next 2 dc’s, 3dc into next dc; rep from * 3 times,1dc into next dc, ss to 1stch

Rnd’s 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12: 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to 1stch

Rnd 5: 1ch, 1dc into next dc, 3dc into next dc, *1dc into next 4 dc’s, 3dc into next dc; rep from * 3 times,1dc into next 2 dc's, ss to 1stch

Rnd 7: 1ch, 1dc into next 2 dc's, 3dc into next dc, *1dc into next 6 dc’s, 3dc into next dc; rep from * 3 times,1dc into next 3 dc's, ss to 1stch

Rnd 9: 1ch, 1dc into next 3 dc's, 3dc into next dc, *1dc into next 8 dc’s, 3dc into next dc; rep from * 3 times,1dc into next 4 dc's, ss to 1stch

Cut yarn, pull through loop and finish.

Horned Square

Make 3ch, ss to 1stch to join

Rnd 1: 1ch, 5dc into ring, ss to 1stch

Rnd 2: 1ch, 1dc into base of ring, 2dc into each dc all the way around, ss to 1stch

Next Rnd: 1ch, 1dc into each dc (11 times), ss to 1stch

Work the above round:-

13 times for 1st version,

6 times for 2nd version

Now follow the instructions for the plain square from rnd 3 onwards.

Construction

Make note of each true corner on your squares – this will be the middle dc on each of the corner increases worked in the last round. It is important to line these up when joining.

Either slip stitch on reverse, or work a crochet seam (a contrast colour looks effective). To work a crochet seam, put wrong sides together with corners matching, and work dc (US-sc) into corresponding chains of the squares together. Start with the centre square, and join all 4 remaining squares, one on each side. Then working from the top down, join each of the 4 side seams in the same way.

Work one round of dc around the brim to neaten edge and emphasise any contrast yarns used.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Lightly block by drying flat.

Things with horns: the minotaur, goats, triceratopses, rhinoceroses, devils, jackalopes, unicorns, and kittens. Wait, not kittens. But you get the point. All of the most ferocious predators in the animal kingdom come equipped to gore you to death. Now you, too, can don horns, rip through a crowd, and leave nothing but blood and carnage in your wake. We are proud to present these Hats, the finest in evolutionary haberdashery.
