Abbreviations

rpt: repeat

Rnd(s): rounds

st(s): stitch(es)

M1: pick up the horizontal loop before the next stitch, place it onto the left needle and knit into the back of it

Alteration notes

It is really easy to adjust this Hat to fit different sizes or accommodate different gauges of yarn. All you need is to know your gauge beforehand which will tell you how many stitches you want to increase to.

If you don’t know your gauge then you can put the live stitches onto a scrap of yarn and try the Hat on as you go.

Don’t forget that you want between 2in and 3in of negative ease when calculating for a custom fit.

How to

With the Circular Cast on method, cast-on 4sts.

Foundation Rnd: Knit into the front and back of each stitch [8sts]

Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts. Place st marker to indicate start of round.

Crown

Rnd 1: *K1, place marker; rpt from * to end

Rnd 2: *K1, M1; rpt from * to end [16sts]

Rnd 3: Knit all sts

Rnd 4: *Knit to 1 st before marker, M1; rpt from * to end [24sts]

Repeat Rnds 3 & 4 until you have 48 [56, 64] sts (or desired size, depending upon gauge and/or custom fit)

Body

Now knit every round (creating Stocking Stitch) until work measures 8.5 [9.5, 10.5] in/21.5 [24.25, 26.75] cm from the crown cast-on or until you run out of yarn.

You’ll want to allow about 2yd/2m of yarn for the Standard Cast-off.

Cast-off very loosely, ideally using a larger needle if you have one.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. A gentle wash and blocking is recommended.
