Abbreviations

K: knit

P: purl

rpt: repeat

R/rnd(s): rounds

st(s): stitch(es)

M1: pick up the horizontal loop between sts, place it onto the left needle then knit into the back of it

yo: wrap yarn round needle to create a yarnover

k2tog: knit next 2 sts together

ssk: slip next 2 sts knitwise, then knit these 2 sts together through the backs of the loops

How to

Using Cable cast-on method, cast on 72 [80, 88] sts.

Join in the round, taking care not to twist the stitches. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Brim

Now work for the brim by knitting every round for 2in/5cm (or desired length) then work increase round once as follows:

Inc Rnd: *K2, M1; rpt from * to end [108, 120, 132 sts]

Body

Rnd 1: Knit all sts

Rnd 2: *k2tog, yo; rpt from * to end

Rnd 3: Knit all sts

Rnd 4: *yo, k2tog; rpt from * to end

These 4 rounds form the pattern for the main body. Work in pattern until the main body of the Hat (excluding the brim) measures approximately 3.5 [4, 4.5] in/9 [10, 11.5] cm (or desired length), ending after a Rnd 4.

Crown

Rnd 1: *ssk, K8, k2tog; rpt from * to end [90, 100, 110 sts]

Rnd 2: *K1, [k2tog, yo] 4 times, K1; rpt from * to end

Rnd 3: *ssk, K6, k2tog; rpt from * to end [72, 80, 88 sts]

Rnd 4: *yo, k2tog; rpt from * to end

Rnd 5: *ssk, K4, k2tog; rpt from * to end [54, 60, 66 sts]

Rnd 6: *K1, [k2tog, yo] 2 times, K1; rpt from * to end

Rnd 7: *ssk, K2, k2tog; rpt from * to end [36, 40, 44 sts]

Rnd 8: *yo, k2tog; rpt from * to end

Rnd 9: *ssk, k2tog; rpt from * to end [18, 20, 22 sts]

Rnd 10: *k2tog, yo; rpt from * to end

Rnd 11: [ssk] 1 [0, 1] times, *k2tog, ssk; rpt from * to end [9, 10, 11 sts]

Rnd 12: K1 [0, 1] *ssk, k2tog; rpt from * to end [5, 5, 6 sts]

For a regular finish, break yarn and thread through remaining 5 [5, 6] sts and tighten to close.

For decorated crown version, continue as follows:

Next Rnd: K1 [1, 0], *k2tog; rpt from * to end [3sts]

For a dangling bobble, work I-cord for 2in/5cm (or desired length) then work from Rnd 1; for a plain bobble, continue as follows:

Rnd 1: *K1, M1; rpt from * to end [6sts]

Join in the round, being careful not to twist the sts

Rnd 2: Knit all sts

Rnd 3: *K1, M1; rpt from * to end [12sts]

Rnd 4: *K2, M1; rpt from * to end [18sts]

Rnd 5: *K3, M1; rpt from * to end [24sts]

Rnd 6: Knit all sts

Rnd 7: Knit all sts

Rnd 8: *K2, k2tog; rpt from * to end [18 sts]

Rnd 9: *K1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [12 sts]

Rnd 10: *k2tog; rpt from * to end [6 sts]

Break yarn and pull through remaining 6 sts to fasten.

Finishing
Weave in all ends. A gentle wash and blocking is required to help the decrease lines settle in and lay flat.
