Abbreviations

K: knit

P: purl

rpt: repeat

st(s): stitch(es)

k2tog: knit next 2sts together

Make Loop - ML

K1 through back of loop, keeping st on left needle bring yarn forward & pass yarn over left thumb to make a loop (approx 4cm) Take yarn back and knit this st again through back of loop, slipping st off needle and pass 1st made on the right needle over this 2nd st

How to

Using Alternate Cable cast-on method cast on 66 [72, 78] sts. The last stitch cast on will be a knit stitch; work foundation row flat, starting from the last stitch cast on, to establish the cast-on as part of the Moss (Seed) stitch pattern:

Foundation Row: *P1, K1; rpt from * to end

Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.

Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Brim

Rnd 1: *K1, P1; rpt from * to end

Rnd 2: *P1, K1; rpt from * to end

These 2 rounds form the pattern for the Brim. Work in pattern until work measures 3 [3, 3.5] in/7.5 [7.5, 9] cm

Body

Rnd 1: Knit all sts through back of loop
Rnd 2: *K1, ML; rpt from * to end
Rnd 3: Knit all sts through back of loop
Rnd 4: *ML, K1; rpt from * to end

These 4 rounds form the pattern for the Body. Work in pattern until work measures approx. 5 [5.5, 6] in/12.5 [14, 15] cm (or desired length).

Crown

20in size jump to Rnd 3, 22in size jump to Rnd 2 and 24in size start at Rnd 1.

Rnd 1: *[P1, K1] 5 times, P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [72sts]

Rnd 2: *[K1, P1] 5 times, k2tog; rpt from * to end [66sts]

Rnd 3: *[P1, K1] 4 times, P1, k2tog; rep to end [60sts]

Rnd 4: *[K1, P1] 4 times, k2tog; rpt from * to end [54 sts]

Rnd 5: *[P1, K1] 3 times, P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [48 sts]

Rnd 6: *[K1, P1] 3 times, k2tog; rpt from * to end [42 sts]

Rnd 7: *[P1, K1] twice, P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [36 sts]

Rnd 8: *[K1, P1] twice, k2tog; rpt from * to end [30 sts]

Rnd 9: *P1, K1, P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [24 sts]

Rnd 10: *K1, P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [18 sts]

Rnd 11: *P1, k2tog; rpt from * to end [12 sts]

Rnd 12: *k2tog; rpt from * to end [6 sts]

ML into each st for 2 rounds. Break yarn and thread through remaining sts and tighten to close.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. You may want to give the loops a gentle tug to tighten the knots. Blocking isn't necessary but does help the shaping & stitches settle.
